Everyone was well versed in how they were expected to behave towards the regime. They had mouths only to keep shut, hands only to make obeisance, knees only to bend and kneel, backs only to bend, and bodies only to shrink before the authorities.

The book is about a black goat brought up in the household of an old couple in a small village facing the mood swings of the rain God. Poonachi bares the mentality of the society towards females (be it a human or animal) which remain wrapped in the loincloth of culture, custom and beliefs.The perpetual hostility they bear throughout their life.

The story traces the journey of a worm like black does through her growing years surviving against hunger, rejection and bullying, steping into motherhood without consent, her experience as a young mother till her very last breath.The feelings of the speechless creature arrested my attention for a longtime, her little wishes, the painful separation from close ones and the sense of helplessness witnessing tormenting incidents taking place with the one formed of her blood and flesh.

The detailed description by the author breathed life into the countryside, the fate of rurals facing the wrath of nature without any assistance, fearful of the system spending their days in anguish and starvation.Just like Poonachi, the dreams and wishes of a woman are crushed under the will of patriarchy, her voice get lost in din under the dikhats of the householder, only the path of submission brings her some respite.

The tale moved me in a way that remains incomprehensible in words. The line which just struck my heart -‘No matter how much you give to this heart, it will never be enough.’
